Espresso first, hot water second
A shot or shots of espresso are lengthened with hot water. The exact ratio changes the intensity, body and amount of crema on top.
Choose how long you want the cup
- An Americano starts with brewed espresso. Adding water changes concentration without adding more coffee or caffeine.
- For a fuller espresso taste, use less water. For a longer, lighter drink, use more. There is no single water ratio used by every café.
- Compare it with drip coffee using similar cup sizes. Notice the Americano's espresso aroma rather than assuming that darker colour means more caffeine.
What does it taste like?
Expect the roast and espresso character to remain clear, but with less density than a straight shot. Compared with drip coffee, the flavour depends on the espresso recipe and how much water is added.
What about caffeine?
Caffeine depends on the number of shots. Ask how many shots are in your cup if caffeine matters to you.
Who might enjoy it?
- You usually drink black coffee but want espresso flavour.
- You want a cup that lasts longer than a shot.
- You prefer less milk and no foam.
