A small change to espresso
Macchiato means marked or stained. The milk changes the shot without turning it into the much larger drink sold by some chains under the same name.
Order the small espresso version
- Ask for an espresso macchiato if you want a shot with just a small amount of milk or foam. A latte macchiato is a different, milk-led drink.
- Take the first sip before stirring. The contrast between the milk and the concentrated coffee is part of the experience.
- If the espresso still tastes too intense, try a cappuccino next. If you want a full mug of milk and coffee, choose a latte instead.
What does it taste like?
The cup stays concentrated and coffee-forward. A little milk rounds sharp edges and adds a soft contrast to the espresso.
What about caffeine?
Its caffeine usually follows the number of espresso shots used, not the spoonful of milk.
Who might enjoy it?
- Straight espresso feels slightly too intense.
- A latte feels too milky.
- You want a compact drink with clear coffee flavour.
