Leaf, water, time
Use enough room for the leaves to expand. Match water temperature and steeping time to the tea family, then remove the leaves before the cup becomes over-extracted.
A first loose-leaf brew
- Start with about 3 g of leaf for a 300 mL mug and a roomy infuser. Follow the leaf packet if it specifies a different dose.
- Use roughly 80°C water for green or white tea, about 90°C for oolong, and freshly boiled water for black tea or rooibos.
- Begin with 2 to 3 minutes for green or white tea, 3 to 4 for black tea or oolong, and 5 minutes for rooibos. Strain, taste, then adjust the next brew.
What does it taste like?
Loose leaf can offer more aroma, texture and distinct flavour than a tightly packed bag. The result may be floral, grassy, malty, smoky, fruity or earthy.
What about caffeine?
True tea from Camellia sinensis contains caffeine. Herbal and fruit infusions may be caffeine-free, but check the actual blend.
Who might enjoy it?
- You want more flavour choices than a standard tea bag.
- You enjoy aroma as much as taste.
- You want help choosing without memorizing tea regions.
